Hi, I'm Helen! I'm an experienced science teacher, A-level Biology examiner and mum, with almost 20 years of experience helping young people succeed in science.

I specialise in online AQA GCSE Science and A-level Biology small-group tuition, helping students build confidence, develop effective revision strategies and achieve exam results they're genuinely proud of.

But for me, great tuition is about so much more than grades. It's about helping teenagers believe in themselves, enjoy learning and realise just how capable they really are.

From the classroom to specialist online science tuition

I studied Human Biology (BSc) at the University of Leeds before completing my PGCE in Secondary Science. I then spent almost two decades teaching in secondary schools and colleges, including working as Head of Biology.

Throughout my teaching career, I've supported hundreds of students through their GCSE Science and A-level Biology exams. I've seen what works, what doesn't, and why even the brightest students can struggle when they haven't been taught how to revise effectively or apply their knowledge in exams.

As an experienced A-level Biology examiner, I also understand exactly what examiners are looking for and how students can turn their scientific understanding into marks.

In 2021, I brought all of that experience together and established Helen Reid Science Tuition, with one simple goal: to provide expert, supportive science tuition that helps young people thrive, both academically and personally.

Why I believe in small-group science tuition

I love teaching small groups because I've seen just how powerful learning alongside other students can be.

My online GCSE Science and A-level Biology group sessions combine the expertise of a qualified, experienced teacher with the encouragement, motivation and shared learning that comes from being part of a supportive group.

Students quickly discover they're not the only ones finding a topic tricky or worrying about their exams. They learn from each other's questions, challenge themselves, celebrate their progress and develop the confidence to have a go.

There's a wonderful balance of collaboration, healthy competition and individual support.

And because my groups are deliberately kept small, every student has the opportunity to ask questions, participate and receive guidance.

In every session, we combine subject knowledge with mathematical skills, required practicals, application questions and exam technique.

I don't want students simply memorising information. I want them to understand it, make connections and know how to use their knowledge when faced with unfamiliar exam questions.

Most importantly, I want them to leave each session feeling more confident than when they arrived.

A teacher, a mentor and a parent

As a mum myself, I know how much we want our children to be happy, confident and able to pursue the opportunities ahead of them.

I also know how difficult it can be to watch your teenager become overwhelmed by revision, lose confidence or feel that their hard work isn't paying off.

That's why I place such importance on wellbeing, motivation and self-belief alongside academic progress.

My sessions are friendly, relaxed and encouraging. Students are supported to ask questions, make mistakes, challenge themselves and recognise their achievements.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is watching that confidence grow.

The student who once dreaded Chemistry starts tackling exam questions independently. The teenager who thought A-level Biology was beyond them begins to see how everything fits together.

And the young person who believed they weren't good at science starts to realise that actually, they are.

Because the right support doesn't just improve exam results. It can completely change how a young person sees themselves.
